Final Mission Project

Thank you Corrine and Alisa for all of you help. Thanks Dad for all of you help. I love you all!!!
Here is a copy of my report.
Name of My Mission
My mission is called – Zachariah El Dorado Palmdale Mission. It is located in Palmdale California. Palmdale is located north of Los Angeles in Los Angeles County. There are a lot of open spaces. The area has desert weather and the wind blows a lot. Because the area is located off the El Camino Real it there is less commotion. It is more of a peaceful place.

History of Father Zachariah
The leader of the church is Father Zachariah. Father Zachariah is a kind and gentle person. He treats people like he wants to be treated. Because he reads the scriptures he is smart. He prays for other to people. He likes to teach people and help others to learn.

Name & History of My Mission
Previous to arriving in Palmdale, Father Zachariah was living in Pittsburgh. There were a lot of people there. It was very busy and chaotic. He wanted to go to a place that was peaceful. Land was cheap in California. So he came west.

He decided to build his mission inland in order to serve more people. He wanted to help the people who didn’t live on the coast. At first The Catholic Church want him to build on the El Camino Real and not so far inland. However they listened to his feelings and allowed him to build in Palmdale. Because of his influence and help in establishing this mission they chose to use his name in the mission. It was established on July 31, 1874.

This is the 22nd operating mission in California but the 24th mission built. Before the 22nd and 23rd missions were destroyed by earthquake. It was built after the San Francisco Solano Mission which was built in 1824. Although it had been a long time since a mission had been built after listening to Father Zachariah’s request the Catholic Church decided it was time to build another mission. There were still many Indians and others to teach.

This mission was known as one of the best missions for the treatment of Indians. Father Zachariah’s kindness towards the Indians was well known. In this mission the Indians received some of the best treatment. They were given food to eat and clothes to wear and education.

A Description & History of My Mission
The Zachariah El Dorado Palmdale mission’s outside is the shape of a rectangle. The outside walls are where the classrooms are and the bell tower, worship area, trading post, and church. My mission has a bell tower with 3 bells. The bells represent hope, faith, and charity. The buildings are made of adobe and then everything was painted with white paint. There is a church at this mission. The mission church is in the shape of a cross. At the entrance of the mission there is an arch with a cross on top. At the outside of the east wall is the basketball court. The residents of the mission enjoyed playing basketball with each other. The courtyard is in the shape of a square. Inside of the courtyard there is a pond with fish and a wishing well.

The landscaping has Joshua Trees, cactus, and tumbleweeds which are often found in Palmdale. There is a garden area with plants, flowers and vegetables. This area helps support the residents of the mission. This is one of the items that are traded regularly at the trading post.

This mission has a unique feature. Because of its location, it is the only mission that sometimes sees snow. Because Palmdale is located close to the mountains, it sometimes gets cold enough to snow.

Life on My Mission
Life on the Zachariah El Dorado Palmdale Mission started each morning with the bells ringing. When the bells would this meant everyone was to start working for the day. Prayer was important part of their day and before they started to work they prayed. The men at the mission spent their day working with the farm and learning how to plant crops and care for their animals. They worked with sheep, horses, pigs, and chickens. They were taught how to built bricks and some of the men also helped with the trading post.

The trading post was important because the residents and others in the community were able to make trades of food, clothing, baskets, candles, tools and other items they needed. The men also spent time in class learning Spanish. The Fryers taught regular Spanish classes. The men’s favorite teachers were Fryer McKay, Fryer Garrett, and Fryer Brock. Fryer Steve taught the men building skills. He was very good at this. Fryer Craig taught the men how to make soap. He would also show the women how to make candles.

The women spent their days spinning yarn, preparing meals, making candles, and washing clothes. Mother Michelle was well known for her baskets. She was a master basket weaver. They also worked in the garden area. These items they used at the trading post to help get other items they needed for their family.

One of the fun things the residents did was play basketball. They enjoyed having regular games with each other.
